Connecting to home directory and lab share network drives

Home directory and lab share network drives can be accessed from outside the Department as well as from inside, and via wireless as well as wired connections.  See the next section to determine whether a connection via the Biochemistry OpenVPN is necessary, and then proceed to the OS-specific instructions for connecting to network drives.

See Micron documentation for accessing the Micron file servers.

1  Connecting to the Biochemistry OpenVPN Service (if necessary)

VPN is unnecessary when making a wired connection from inside the Department on a personal laptop registered on the Biochemistry network.

For other cases (connecting via wireless, connecting from outside the Department, or connecting from inside the Department on an unregistered computer), you need to connect via the Biochemistry OpenVPN service.

2  Connecting to your home directory or lab share

Windows

Open Windows Explorer (Start | All Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer)

Home directory:

Type \\biochstore4.bioch.ox.ac.uk\home\username in the address bar (replacing username with your Biochemistry username).

In the Network Credentials popup, enter BIOCHEMISTRY\username and the associated password (replacing username with your Biochemistry username) and click 'OK' .

Windows 7: Right-click 'Favorites' and select 'Add current location to Favorites'.

Windows 10: Right-click 'Quick access' and select 'Pin current folder to Quick access'.

Lab share:

Type \\biochstore4.bioch.ox.ac.uk\ or \\biochstore6.bioch.ox.ac.uk\ (depending on which server your lab share is located) into the "Folder" space.

In the Network Credentials popup, enter BIOCHEMISTRY\username and the associated password (replacing username with your Biochemistry username) and click 'OK'.

A list of lab shares will appear. Find your lab folder and right-click it.

Windows 7: Right-click 'Favorites' and select 'Add current location to Favorites'.

Windows 10: Select 'Pin to Quick access'.

Mac OS X

Choose Go -> Connect to Server... with the finder.

For a home directory connection, type smb://biochstore4.bioch.ox.ac.uk/home/username into the address line at the top of the window (replacing username with your Biochemistry username). Then enter your username and password as prompted.

See Macintosh access to lab shares for detailed information on this topic.

Linux

Use a file manager such as Dolphin or Nautilus that understands the smb3 protocol.  Ensure that the samba-common package is installed and edit /etc/samba/smb.conf so that the line

   client max protocol = SMB3

appears in the [global] section.

For a home directory connection, type smb://biochstore4.bioch.ox.ac.uk/home/username into the address line at the top of the window (replacing username with your Biochemistry username).

For a shared data and software connection, type smb://biochstore4.bioch.ox.ac.uk or smb://biochstore6.bioch.ox.ac.uk (depending on which server your lab share is located).

Enter BIOCHEMISTRY\username and the associated password (replacing username with your Biochemistry username) as prompted.
