‘A Case of Crystal Clarity’ animation launched with researchers’ input

Professor Elspeth Garman and her DPhil student Jonny Brooks-Bartlett have joined up with Oxford Sparks to create a new animation about X-ray crystallography (http://www.oxfordsparks.net/animations/case-crystal-clarity).

The animation, the latest in the Oxford Sparks’ series which aims to bring to life science taking place across the University, has just been launched on its website.

Elspeth and Jonny, working with MPLS Science Communication Office Annabel Cook, provided their expert knowledge of the subject to help develop ‘A Case of Crystal Clarity’. The animation gives an overview of crystallography and how it works, and is narrated by actress and comedienne Mel Giedroyc.

They also helped to put together additional material to accompany the animation including the science behind the animation and a top ten list of related links.

Jonny, a finalist in the science communication competition ‘Famelab’, described the experience as ‘awesome’.

‘I didn't know what to expect when I was offered the chance to be involved, but Annabel's fantastic organisation kept everyone and everything on track to deliver such an amazing piece of engaging science. My supervisor Elspeth provided invaluable advice towards the project and also to me, for which I'm very grateful.’

‘I'm incredibly proud to have been a part of this and I really hope that it adds another layer of accessibility to crystallography and science for the non-specialist audience.’
