Excellent teacher award for Dr Mark Wormald

Dr Mark Wormald

Dr Mark Wormald, a lecturer in the Biochemistry department, has received an Excellent Teacher Award from the University. He was presented with the award by the Vice-Chancellor at a ceremony at Rhodes House in October.

The scheme recognises excellent or innovative teaching by individuals or groups within the University. Dr Wormald's award was one of a number of awards made the Medical Sciences Division who judged his nomination by departmental colleagues, alongside feedback from the students he teaches.

The Excellent Teacher Award recognises the many contributions he has made to the department's teaching responsibilities and his activities more widely within the University.

Dr Wormald combines his position as biochemistry tutor at Corpus Christi College with Associate Director of Teaching for the department. As well as teaching on the undergraduate biochemistry course, he organises first year practicals and the first year biophysical chemistry course. He receives consistently high student feedback for the teaching he delivers.

Another valuable contribution has been to provide training and support for new teachers within the department. Additionally, as the department's undergraduate admissions coordinator, he has improved the Biochemistry admissions process to make it more transparent for applicants and tutors.

The award also noted Dr Wormald's substantial involvement in access initiatives and in activities aimed at widening participation at the departmental, college and University level.
