A-Z Index of IT Support
The eduroam and OWL wireless services are widely deployed throughout the University. The Biochemistry network supports both services and wireless access points have been installed in the Department's three buildings.
The eduroam service is encrypted and is recommended for University members. It allows a mobile wireless client to roam automatically between access points and provides a robust wireless connection, avoiding the intermittent dropout issues that sometimes affect OWL.
The OWL service is unencrypted and is intended for use by external visitors with no University affiliation.
How to use eduroam (for members of the Department)
Ensure you have registered for an Oxford Remote Access account (this is distinct from your Oxford (Nexus) account).
Configure your machine by following the IT Services Eduroam instructions. You should now be able to access the internet via eduroam.
To gain access to the Biochemistry network while connecting via eduroam, use the Biochemistry OpenVPN service.
How to use OWL (for members of the Department)
Consider using the eduroam service instead, which provides a more robust connection than OWL.
Ensure you have a Biochemistry user account and that your computer is configured for the Biochemistry OpenVPN service.
Follow the IT Services OWL VPN instructions but don't install the Cisco VPN client. Ignore references both to it and to connecting to IT Services using Remote Access username and password. Instead connect to Biochemistry via the Biochemistry OpenVPN service with your Biochemistry username and password.
Use of our VPN is necessary to gain access to the Biochemistry network, since the Cisco VPN will not provide access to the network inside our firewall.
How to use OWL (for external visitors with no University affiliation)
Ask your departmental sponsor to obtain for you an OWL Visitor Network account from Biochemistry IT Support. You will receive a form giving Visitor Network credentials and details of how to connect to the service.
