A-Z Index of IT Support

It's possible to edit web pages associated with your work directly - we have a content management system that lets you "word process" your content and save it directly. Here are the steps you'll need to follow:

Contact webmaster@bioch.ox.ac.uk for more details

1  Let the webmaster know the IP number of the computer you'll be doing your edits with

As you can imagine, there are many layers of security to negotiate before you can write to our live website. The first is to have the departmental IP number of your usual computer added to a whitelist.

You can find your computer's IP number here:

2  List the pages you wish to edit

E-mail webmaster@bioch.ox.ac.uk with the URLs of the page(s) you wish to edit. You can copy and paste the URLs from the address bar in your web browser.

3  Get a login to our content management system and navigate to your page

The webmaster can set you up with a username and password to our content management system, and let you know the URL to log in from. Unless you use the content management system's other features, you'll simply see one button, "Edit ASP Site Pages" (ASP is the underlying architecture that drives most of our website) and a logout button.

Click "Edit ASP Site Pages" to enter the website's tree structure and navigate your way to your own page. Most of the buttons you see will be "greyed out", but any you are enabled to edit will be lit up blue.

4  Edit your content

You'll see an editing interface as follows:

Nothing is committed to be live until you tick the "go live with this page" button and click the blue "save" button. If your editing goes wrong simply navigate away from the page and come back to it.

You can add related information (to appear in the bar on the right) by entering descriptions and URLs to the form at the bottom of the page. Please note that this won't do anything useful on research group pages, as they have a different, wider layout than other pages and the related information column doesn't appear on these pages.

5  Notes

You'll need to liaise with the webmaster about uploading images - this is outside the current scope of the CMS.

If you're copying & pasting from MS-Word, please use the "paste from word" icon to avoid messing up the text formatting.

Please stick to basic word processing actions rather than using lots of different fonts etc. Let the website's departmental look and feel dictate the styling.

Pages not beginning "www.bioch" are edited with different tools - please talk to IT support if you want to edit other areas.
