From
the A34 (northbound): Approximately 8 miles on from the A34 junction with the M4
at Newbury, take the A4185 (A417) exit, signposted for Rutherford Appleton
Laboratory (RAL) and Wantage. Turn left onto the A4185 and then turn left at
the roundabout after approximately ½ mile. Go straight across the 2 mini roundabouts and continue down
Fermi Avenue until you see the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory main gate on
the left.
From
the A34 (southbound): Take the A4130 (A417) exit
signposted Milton, Chilton, Didcot and Wantage. At the roundabout take the fourth exit signposted A4130
Wantage, Steventon, Drayton, Harwell.
Follow this road up the hill for 1½ miles, going straight ahead at the traffic lights. Continue
straight on to the next roundabout (Rowstock) and take the second exit onto the
A4185. Pass the UKAEA Harwell
Laboratory on your right after approximately 2 miles, then turn right at the
next roundabout, taking the exit signposted Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and
MRC. Go straight across the 2 mini roundabouts and continue down Fermi Avenue
until you see the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory main gate on the left.
Public Transport - General Information
Rutherford
Appleton Laboratory (part of the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus) is 6 miles
south-west of Didcot Parkway railway station and about 15 miles from
Oxford. Didcot Parkway
station is about 45 minutes train journey from London Paddington station. Didcot Parkway also provides rail
connections to Birmingham, the South and West of England and South Wales. When you arrive at Didcot Parkway
station you can either take a bus (see "Bus" Section below) or a taxi
from outside the station (about 10 - 15 minutes to the site) at a cost of
approximately £10.00.
There
are regular bus services (except for Sundays) from Oxford and Newbury right
onto the Campus.
Flying
Rutherford
Appleton Laboratory is about one hour's drive from London Heathrow Airport and
two hours or so from London Gatwick Airport. The Campus can also be reached from other UK airports:
London Stansted, Birmingham International, Southampton and London Luton.
Heathrow
A
frequent coach service, Reading-Heathrow
Railair, takes passengers to Reading Station for connection with trains to
Didcot Parkway. This service picks up passengers from stands 1 and 2 at the
Central Bus Station and stand 10 at Terminal 5 Bus and Coach Station; if you
arrive at Terminal 4, take the free shuttle service to Terminals 1, 2 & 3
where you can transfer to the Railair coach. The journey time to Reading is approximately 40 minutes,
depending on traffic.
Driving
from Heathrow Airport: Take the M4 motorway towards Slough, Reading and the West.
Continue as far as junction 13 and then drive north for about 8 miles on the
A34 towards Oxford and follow the A34 (northbound) directions given above.
Gatwick
A
direct train service operates between Gatwick Airport and Reading Station to
connect with services to Didcot Parkway railway station. The journey takes about
1 hour 40 minutes.
Driving
from Gatwick Airport: Take the M23 towards London and Guildford. At junction 7/8
join the M25 to Heathrow and Watford. At junction 15, take the M4 towards
Slough, Reading and the West, and continue to junction 13. Drive north for
about 8 miles on the A34 towards Oxford and follow the A34 (northbound)
directions given above.
Stansted
From
Stansted airport either take the National
Express coach to Oxford and then train to Didcot Parkway Station or bus to
the Harwell Campus or travel by rail via St Pancras and Paddington Stations in
London to Didcot Parkway station. Details of train times can be accessed at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk.
Birmingham
International
The
airport has a frequent shuttle rail service to Birmingham New Street Station
from where there is a direct train service to Didcot Parkway Station. Journey time approximately 1 hour 30

London
Luton
From
Luton airport either take the National
Express coach to Oxford and then either train to Didcot or bus to the
Harwell Campus (see below) or travel by rail via St Pancras and Paddington
Stations in London to Didcot Parkway station. Details of train times can be

Southampton
There
is a direct train service from Southampton Airport to Didcot Parkway
station. Journey times are
approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes and they usually run at hourly intervals.

Trains
Trains
from Didcot Parkway Station go to many areas of the UK. There is a frequent, fast service to
London Paddington Station and to Oxford and the Midlands, There are also
services to the South coast, the West of England and South Wales. Details of train times can be accessed

Buses
There
are regular weekday bus services to the campus from Oxford, Didcot and Newbury:
Thames
Travel's X32 bus service runs between Oxford, Didcot Parkway, RL (ask for the
Harwell IBC Bus Station, Fermi Avenue) and Wantage. Mondays to Saturdays
(except Bank Holidays). Timetable

Newbury
Buses 6 and 9 services run between Newbury, Harwell campus (ask for IBC Bus
Station) and Didcot Parkway. Monday to Saturday (except Bank Holidays). Timetable information
The
main gate to RAL can be found approx. 150m from the Harwell IBC bus station on
the opposite side of the road.
Please
note that there are no bus services to or from RAL on Sundays.
