Ben Berks awarded ERC Advanced Grant

Prof Ben Berks

The ERC grant awarded to Ben Berks will enable his laboratory to investigate the molecular mechanism of the bacterial type 9 protein secretion system (T9SS). The T9SS is a protein export pathway that underpins the pathogenicity of bacteria that cause severe dental disease in humans. Protein secretion by these bacteria has also been implicated in the aetiology of arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease.  Ben’s laboratory will use state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary approaches to define and characterise the entire T9SS pathway, and will visualise the transport of individual proteins through this secretion system in live cells.
