Micron joins the Euro-BioImaging UK Node

Acceptance into the Euro-BioImaging network is a mark of international recognition of excellence, designating Micron as a world-class centre for advanced microscopy

Micron at the Department of Biochemistry is proud to announce that it has become part of the UK node of Euro-BioImaging after a rigorous international peer-review process by Euro-BioImaging's independent scientific advisory board. Being part of this network is international recognition of excellence as a microscopy facility.

Micron joins Euro-BioImaging as part of the newly formed University of Oxford Advanced Microscopy Core, a collaboration between Micron (Department of Biochemistry), the Cellular Imaging Core Facility (CICF, Centre for Human Genetics), and the Oxford-ZEISS Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Imaging (Oxford-ZEISS CoE, Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology and Institute for Developmental & Regenerative Medicine).

Together, the three facilities will provide external researchers with streamlined access to Oxford’s expertise and infrastructure in super-resolution, advanced dynamic and functional imaging.

Deirdre Kavanagh, Manager of Micron, says: “We are delighted to formally be part of the UK node of Euro-BioImaging and its network of microscopy facilities in the UK. This recognition gives us opportunities to host researchers coming from Europe, as well as other parts of the UK, and for Micron staff to be funded to shadow professionals at other facilities, to attend network events and conferences, and to undertake specialised training. This is very exciting news!”

One of the benefits of membership of the network is that access charges for external users are also covered via the £1.8M UK BioIimaging User Access Fund, funded by UKRI-BBSRC and UKRI-MRC. This offers up to £5K for imaging experiments plus analysis and up to £2K for image analysis only.

Researchers across the UK now have open access to more than 60 cutting-edge imaging techniques, image analysis and expert support, from super-resolution and volume EM to spatial biology, cryoEM and bioimage analysis. The next deadline to apply for this funding is 30 November, with decisions taken within around four weeks and priority going to PhD students, RTPs, junior postdocs and early-career PIs. There is also an opportunity for SMEs to benefit through the Euro-BioImaging SME Access Pilot with up to €5,000 paid directly to a Euro-BioImaging host facilities. The next deadline is 13 November 2026.
